Popular British-Sierra Leonean Actor Idris Elba has starred in a new series titled Hijack unveiled by Apple TV+

Apple TV+ has unveiled its newest offering, “Hijack,” a gripping series starring Idris Elba as the enigmatic hostage, Sam Nelson. In this heart-pounding real-time seven-episode drama, Nelson, a skilled business negotiator, becomes embroiled in a high-stakes hostage situation aboard a commercial flight from Dubai to London Heathrow.

Elba, known for his captivating performances, shines as the reluctant hero forced to navigate the dangerous dynamics of the hijacked plane. “Hijack” showcases Elba’s ability to command the screen in tense and action-packed roles, cementing his status as a leading man in the genre.

The central stage of the series is the sold-out Kingdom Airlines flight, held captive by a gang of criminals. However, “Hijack” also takes viewers beyond the confines of the aircraft, offering various external perspectives, including those of Sam’s ex-wife and their son anxiously awaiting his safe arrival in London.

Drawing inspiration from classic hostage thrillers such as “Air Force One,” “Inside Man,” “24,” and “The Commuter,” “Hijack” promises to deliver a thrilling ride for fans of the genre. While Apple TV+ hasn’t reinvented the formula, Idris Elba’s captivating portrayal of Sam Nelson adds a fresh and exciting element to the series.

This new project comes on the heels of another collaboration between Elba and the streaming giant. A few months ago, Netflix premiered “Luther: The Fallen Sun,” a movie spin-off based on the popular TV crime thriller series “Luther.” Elba played the restless detective who continuously challenged his superiors at Scotland Yard and matched wits with London’s most notorious serial killers.

Unfortunately, “The Fallen Sun” failed to live up to the expectations set by the original series. Written by Neil Cross, the creator of “Luther,” the movie veered off course, deviating from the beloved characters and concepts that initially captivated audiences. Critics noted that the film seemed out of touch, almost transforming the gritty detective drama into a gruesome horror movie reminiscent of “Saw.”

This misstep was indicative of the series’ decline since its third season in 2013. Fans of “Luther” have endured more disappointments than triumphs in recent years, leaving them longing for the quality that defined the earlier seasons.

However, with “Hijack,” Idris Elba once again proves his versatility as an actor, delivering a compelling performance in a thrilling and fast-paced storyline. Apple TV+ subscribers and fans of the action genre are eagerly anticipating the next episodes of this high-stakes hostage drama
