A photo widely shared on Facebook claiming to show “Kambia City” in Sierra Leone has been found to be false. The image, which features wide roads and tall buildings, is not from Sierra Leone but from Owerri, a city in southeastern Nigeria.
The photo first appeared on a Facebook page called Sierra Gist TV, with the caption: “This is the new Kambia City, Sierra Leone.” The post quickly gained attention, with thousands of views and shares.
What We Found
Using reverse image tools imagesift, i traced the original source of the photo to be taken in Nigeria in 2019.
Further searches showed no news or government source in Sierra Leone had shared such a development in Kambia.
Kambia, a town in the northern region of Sierra Leone, is known for its simple infrastructure, small markets and border trade with Guinea. No recent road expansion or high-rise development similar to the one shown in the viral photo has been reported there.
Why This Matters
False posts like this can confuse the public and create fake impressions about real places. While the intention behind the post is unclear, it may have been meant to promote development or attract attention. But mislabelled photos damage trust in online information and can lead to false hopes or even political arguments.
