Six artists from Sierra Leone are set to participate in the Berklee Gnaoua and World Music Festival in Essaouira, Morocco, scheduled from June 16 to 21, 2025.
Organised by Berklee College of Music, the five-day programme will include ensemble sessions, musicianship classes, special lectures, and performances. The initiative aims to promote musical exchange among emerging artists from around the world.
Representing Sierra Leone are Boimanya Koroma (Boii), Donald Leigh (Donii Major), Rebecca Jawara, Sam Nabieu Sandi, Charles Bah, and Kate Krontiris. Their participation is facilitated by Telem Uncommon Sounds and CRIBS International.
In addition to their training, the artists will host an educational workshop focused on Sierra Leone’s musical traditions. The session will explore the country’s diverse genres, instruments, and cultural influences, offering attendees insight into the evolution of Sierra Leonean music.
Photographer Olu Smith will also document the experience, working with the A3 Communications team throughout the event.
Speaking on the participation of Sierra Leonean artists, Jason Camelio, Assistant Vice President of Global Initiatives at Berklee, said the programme reflects efforts to bridge cultures through music.
Rosaline Iyabode Johnson, co-founder of Telem Uncommon Sounds, highlighted the importance of creating global platforms for local experimental music, saying the initiative supports long-term goals of musical visibility for Sierra Leone.
The event will conclude with a concert leading into the 26th edition of the Gnaoua and World Music Festival, one of the continent’s oldest and most prominent music events. Over 400 artists are expected to perform, representing musical styles from across Africa and beyond.
