Sierra Leonean singer Boimanya Koroma, known as Boii, alongside five other artists, is set to represent Sierra Leone at the Berklee Gnaoua and World Music Festival in Essaouira, Morocco, from June 16 to 21.
The group includes Donald Leigh (Donii Major), Rebecca Jawara, Sam Nabieu Sandi, Charles Bah, and Kate Krontiris. Their participation is supported by Telem Uncommon Sounds and CRIBS International.
The artists will take part in a five-day programme organised by Berklee College of Music, featuring ensemble training, musicianship classes, and lectures. The initiative brings together musicians from across the globe to explore different musical styles, rhythms, and collaborative approaches.
As part of the programme, the Sierra Leonean team will lead an educational workshop on the country’s musical traditions. The session will introduce participants to Sierra Leone’s range of sounds — from traditional genres such as Bubu and Gumbe to contemporary styles like Afrobeat and gospel.
The workshop and training will conclude with a final concert, immediately preceding the 26th edition of the Gnaoua and World Music Festival — one of Africa’s longest-standing and most prominent music events.
The trip will also be documented by Sierra Leonean photographer Olu Smith, who will work with the A3 Communications visuals team during the programme.
Organisers say the participation highlights ongoing efforts to promote Sierra Leonean music internationally and create space for cultural exchange on global stages.
