Mohamed Kallon in Talks to Become Head Coach of JS Kabylie

Days after parting ways with the Sierra Leone national team, Africa’s most decorated Sierra Leonean footballer is reportedly in direct negotiations to take charge of one of North Africa’s most storied clubs a move that would mark the biggest appointment of his coaching career.

Mohamed Kallon’s journey from the streets of Kenema to the San Siro took a generation to complete. His next chapter may take him to the Oukil Ramdane Stadium in Tizi Ouzou and it could happen within weeks.

Sources close to both parties confirm that JS Kabylie, one of Algeria’s most decorated football clubs, are in direct talks with the former Sierra Leone head coach over a potential appointment as their new manager ahead of the 2026/27 season. Negotiations are described as ongoing, with Kallon emerging as the frontrunner to succeed German tactician Josef Zinnbauer, whose turbulent tenure at the club came to an end in March 2026.

Zinnbauer was dismissed with immediate effect following a disastrous CAF Champions League campaign in which JS Kabylie finished bottom of their group with just three points from six matches a return that fell well below expectations for one of Algeria’s most decorated sides. The club managed only a single win in the group stage, and the wheels came off further in domestic competition. By the time of his sacking, Zinnbauer had managed just one win in five matches and left the club sitting ninth in the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 with 28 points from 20 matches a dismal position for a club that had finished runners-up the previous season and returned to continental competition with genuine ambition.

Founded in 1946, JS Kabylie are one of Algeria’s most celebrated clubs, having produced 87 coaching changes across their history and they are now searching for a figure capable of rebuilding stability and restoring the club’s standing in both domestic and African competition. The board appears to believe that figure could be Mohamed Kallon.

The case for Kallon goes well beyond his legendary playing career. He holds a UEFA Pro Licence the highest coaching qualification in European football, and one he became the first Sierra Leonean ever to obtain. That credential alone sets him apart from the vast majority of candidates available for a job of this profile on the African continent.

Kallon was appointed Sierra Leone national team head coach in February 2025, describing the role as a duty to his homeland. “I accept this job because it is for my country. It was not an easy decision; there were many factors to consider. However, here we are,” he said at his unveiling, adding that his love for Sierra Leone drove him to take on the responsibility.

During his tenure, Kallon oversaw international friendlies and FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, and the SLFA publicly backed his work as recently as January 2026, with President Babadi Kamara stating “our relationship with Coach Kallon is solid. He has our full support, and there is no intention to terminate his role.” Nevertheless, the SLFA recently confirmed they are advertising the national team head coach position, with Kallon eligible to reapply a turn of events that has surprised many in the Sierra Leonean football community. That development, whatever its precise causes, appears to have freed Kallon to explore opportunities elsewhere and JS Kabylie have moved quickly.

Any JS Kabylie board member researching Kallon’s file would find a CV that commands immediate respect. Widely considered the most famous footballer ever produced by Sierra Leone, Kallon played for Inter Milan from 2001 to 2004 and made 39 appearances for the Leone Stars during his international career. At Inter he was top scorer for the club in the 2001/02 season, helped the Nerazzurri reach the UEFA Cup Final in 2002, played a key role in their Champions League semi-final run in 2003, and was part of the squad that finished runners-up in Serie A that same year — 65 appearances, 20 goals for one of the world’s most demanding clubs.

At AS Monaco he scored ten goals in his debut 2004/05 season and featured in the UEFA Champions League, accumulating 48 league appearances and 13 goals across three years on the French Riviera. He also founded FC Kallon, who have won the Sierra Leone Premier League giving him direct experience of club ownership and management at the grassroots level of African football.

If the deal is concluded, Mohamed Kallon would become the head coach of a 14-time Algerian championship winner with continental pedigree and a fanbase that fills stadiums a scale of appointment no Sierra Leonean coach has previously reached. It would be a statement not just about Kallon’s individual trajectory but about the growing credibility of West African football expertise in markets that have historically looked to Europe and North Africa for technical leadership.

From a beach in Freetown where a Lebanese diplomat’s son first spotted his talent, to the San Siro, to the Stade Louis II in Monaco, to the touchline of the Leone Stars and now, potentially, to one of North Africa’s proudest football institutions. Mohamed Kallon has always moved forward. Tizi Ouzou may simply be his next destination.

Negotiations are ongoing. A formal announcement is expected ahead of the 2026/27 pre-season.
