Haja Mariama Bangura was born and raised in Makeni, Bombali District, northern part of Sierra Leone.  she became aware at an early stage of her life that women and girls face too much abuse inside and outside of their homes. She saw and experienced this abuse growing up as a young girl – waking up to the bitter realities of suffering in the daily life of women and girls in her neighborhood and she wanted to see things change.

At a tender age, She decided to be part of the change, by joining the Children’s Forum Network (CFN) in Makeni, a leading child advocacy organisation in Sierra Leone; it helps children to speak out on issues affecting them through media and outreach programmes

At junior secondary school, Haja Mariama Bangura continued pushing her passion for advocacy by introducing a School journal club. “We did news presentations on student issues in and around campus. I conducted assembly talks and I became popular for doing children’s programmes in schools, which earned me the opportunity to work for many organisations as a peer educator and a girl child mentor.” she noted during an artitle she wrote on Restless Development Sierra Leone

Taking on her Facebook award receiving the award, she said

“Dolly Parton once said

“If your actions create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then, you are an excellent leader.”

On this note I want to congratulate myself for being part of the first edition of the Bombali District fifty most influential women in leadership awards. This is the second time i have been recognised as an influential person within the district. I want to dedicate this award to the women and girls that I have been working with at Restless Development Sierra Leone . Being a female leader from the north is quiet challenging and difficult but I believed that A woman with a voice is by definition a strong woman. My passion and Allah’s grace have been the driving force throughout. Thanks to my family and friends for supporting me through my advocacy strides. I promise to continue to advocate for the welfare and protection of women in Sierra Leone.
