The World Food Programme (WFP) has introduced a new strategic plan focused on strengthening food systems in Sierra Leone, with the aim of tackling hunger and improving nutrition across the country.
The plan, which will run from 2026 to 2030, is designed to support the government’s efforts to address food insecurity by improving how food is produced, processed, and distributed. It builds on previous programmes and aligns with national priorities such as the Feed Salone initiative.
At the centre of the strategy is a “food systems approach,” which looks at the entire chain from farming to consumption. WFP says this will help ensure that vulnerable communities, especially children and low-income households, have better access to nutritious food.
The plan will also focus on strengthening the home-grown school feeding programme, supporting smallholder farmers, and creating more opportunities for young people in agriculture. Special attention will be given to empowering rural women and improving livelihoods within key food value chains.
In addition, the strategy aims to improve resilience against shocks such as climate change and economic challenges, ensuring that communities can meet their food needs before, during, and after crises.
Overall, WFP’s new strategic plan is expected to play a key role in improving food security in Sierra Leone by promoting sustainable agriculture, boosting local food production, and strengthening national systems.
