The World Bank has reaffirmed its support for the ongoing Manowa Bridge project in Kailahun District, highlighting its importance in improving access and connectivity for local communities.

The bridge, which is under construction across the Moa River, is expected to link Manowa and Pendembu, replacing the long-used ferry system that has for years limited movement, especially during the rainy season.

According to updates, the project forms part of broader efforts to improve rural infrastructure and support economic activities, particularly for farmers and traders who depend on reliable transport to access markets.

The World Bank, which is supporting the project alongside the Government of Sierra Leone, said the bridge will significantly improve access to essential services such as healthcare, education and trade opportunities for communities in the area.

Officials say the current ferry crossing often becomes unreliable during heavy rains, leaving communities cut off and affecting emergency services, movement of goods and daily life.

Once completed, the Manowa Bridge is expected to ease transportation challenges, reduce travel time and strengthen economic links within Kailahun District and surrounding areas.
