The decision to name the facility Sydney Studio was a tribute to Sydney Ebenezer Johnson, one of the founders of Spark Media. Johnson, a talented entrepreneur in the media and film production industry, made a significant impact in Atlanta before his life was tragically cut short by liver cancer in the United States. Described as someone with a strong sense of fairness and humility, Johnson’s legacy serves as an inspiration for the team at Spark Media.

CEO Joe L Aruna explained that his motivation to establish the studio was driven by a desire to change the negative narrative often associated with Sierra Leone. Aruna encouraged Sierra Leoneans living abroad to return home and contribute positively to their country, rather than simply complaining about its perceived shortcomings. By setting up an entity like Sydney Studio, Aruna aims to play his part in changing this narrative.

Aruna, who has spent the past 20 years in the United States, highlighted the selective portrayal of countries in the media. He pointed out that there are places in America without running water, but these areas are rarely shown in movies or on news channels. In contrast, Sierra Leoneans tend to focus on promoting negative images, whether for political reasons or otherwise. Aruna stressed the importance of recognizing that everything put out by Sierra Leoneans contributes to the country’s brand, and he hopes to see more quality content showcasing Sierra Leone in a positive light.

Co-founder and Managing Director, Foday Issadin Kamara expressed his excitement about the unveiling of Sydney Studio and thanked all the guests for attending the event. Kamara described the studio as first-class and emphasized its commitment to redefining excellence and quality. He explained that their intention is not only to create inspiring videos but also to tell the positive story of Sierra Leone. Kamara drew a parallel with his CEO’s experience in America, where he learned that countries can choose what they want to show to the world. Spark Media aims to do the same for Sierra Leone.
