The Government of Sierra Leone has officially opened the Leicester Peak Viewpoint in Freetown, marking a major step in efforts to promote tourism and grow the country’s economy.

The new facility, located on one of the highest نقاط overlooking the capital, offers visitors a wide panoramic view of the city, the Atlantic coastline, and surrounding green hills. The site sits about 564 metres above sea level, making it one of the most scenic viewpoints in the country.

The project is part of the government’s wider plan to diversify the economy by investing in tourism and reducing reliance on mining. It was developed with support from international partners, including the World Bank, under the Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project.

Officials say the Leicester Peak Viewpoint is expected to attract both local and international visitors, while also creating jobs and business opportunities for nearby communities. The facility includes viewing decks, rest areas, and spaces for small businesses such as craft vendors and tour services.

Authorities believe the opening of the site will improve Sierra Leone’s image as a tourist destination and encourage more investment in the sector.

The government has also indicated plans to partner with private operators to manage and maintain the facility, ensuring it meets international standards and delivers a quality experience for visitors.

The launch of the Leicester Peak Viewpoint highlights the country’s renewed focus on tourism as a key driver of economic growth.
