The Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) has initiated discussions with Njala University’s Department of Peace and Development Studies aimed at fostering collaboration in peace education, research, and community development.

The engagement took place during a visit by ICPNC’s Southern Regional Office to the department at Njala University’s Towama Campus, where the Commission met with the Head of Department, Dr. Tommy Matthew Hanson, and members of the academic staff.

Welcoming the delegation, Dr. Hanson highlighted the department’s commitment to producing graduates equipped with the knowledge and practical skills needed to address conflict, promote peaceful coexistence, and contribute to sustainable development.

He described the engagement as a valuable opportunity to build partnerships that connect academic research with practical peacebuilding efforts, noting that collaboration between universities and institutions such as ICPNC is essential for strengthening peace and social cohesion in Sierra Leone.

Speaking during the meeting, ICPNC Southern Regional Coordinator Belinda Ndanema emphasized the importance of working closely with academic institutions to advance the Commission’s peacebuilding mandate.

“Universities play a critical role in shaping future leaders and peacebuilders. By strengthening our engagement with institutions such as Njala University, we can create opportunities for knowledge sharing, research, and community-based initiatives that contribute to national cohesion and sustainable peace,” she said.

Discussions focused on potential areas of cooperation, including peace education, capacity building, research, and community outreach programmes. Both institutions also exchanged views on the role of education in preventing conflict and promoting inclusive development.

The visit forms part of ICPNC’s efforts to strengthen partnerships with key stakeholders across the country and reflects a shared commitment to promoting dialogue, peacebuilding, and social cohesion.

The meeting concluded with both parties expressing optimism about future collaboration and a willingness to explore initiatives that will support peace and development efforts in Sierra Leone.
