On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Summit of the Future, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, Mayor of Freetown and Co-Chair of C40 Cities, met with Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and current Chair of The Elders. The discussion focused on the leadership roles cities and mayors play in addressing climate change and the need to elevate cities’ participation in global decision-making. Mark Watts, Executive Director of C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, also participated in the discussion.
Earlier in the day, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr attended a breakfast meeting hosted by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI). Conversations there focused on sustainable support for African cities, emphasizing the importance of moving beyond short-term projects and embracing longer-term, impactful strategies for urban growth.
