The European Union has supported a key stakeholder workshop in Freetown this week, aimed at developing Sierra Leone’s first National Agricultural Insurance Policy and Implementation Roadmap.

Agriculture remains the backbone of Sierra Leone’s economy, supporting about 65 percent of households. However, the sector continues to face serious challenges, especially from climate shocks such as droughts and floods. These risks have slowed down investment and limited growth in farming activities across the country.

The EU-funded workshop brought together government officials, insurance companies, banks, and farmer cooperatives. The goal is to design a strong and sustainable agricultural insurance system that will protect farmers and encourage more investment in the sector.

The initiative is being co-led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the United Nations Capital Development Fund. It forms part of the government’s flagship Feed Salone strategy, which focuses on improving food security and strengthening the agricultural sector.

Key aims of the new insurance framework include protecting smallholder farmers from risks, unlocking access to agricultural finance, and building a more climate-resilient food system.

The European Union says it remains committed to supporting Sierra Leone in creating a more secure and prosperous future for its agricultural sector, while helping farmers better manage risks and improve productivity.

Experts believe that once implemented, the insurance policy will play an important role in boosting confidence among farmers and investors, leading to increased food production and economic growth.
