A cargo ship linked to Sierra Leone has been intercepted in Spain in connection with a major cocaine trafficking case.
The vessel, identified as Arconian, was stopped by Spanish authorities during an anti-drug operation. Reports say the ship had earlier left Freetown on April 22, 2026, heading towards the Mediterranean.
Investigations show that the ship was being commercially managed by a company based in Juba Hill, Freetown. The company is said to have handled the vessel’s cargo operations.
The ship, which sails under the Comoros flag, is about 91 metres long and had previously operated under a different name before its registration was changed earlier this year.
Further findings indicate that the vessel’s technical and operational management was handled by another firm based in Turkey. This company was responsible for maintaining the ship and overseeing its operations.
Spanish authorities intercepted the vessel as part of a wider crackdown on international drug trafficking. According to global reports, the operation led to one of the largest cocaine seizures in Europe, with about 30 tonnes of the drug found on board.
The incident has raised concerns about shipping operations, vessel registration, and cargo monitoring linked to West Africa. It also highlights growing fears about the use of international waters for drug trafficking.
Investigations are still ongoing, and Spanish authorities say more details will be released as the case develops.
