The President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Alhaji Manika Kamara, has said the role of journalists remains vital in strengthening democracy as Sierra Leone celebrates its 65th Independence Anniversary.

In a message marking Independence Day, Kamara congratulated citizens at home and abroad, describing the anniversary as a moment to reflect on the country’s journey and renew national commitment to unity and development.

He reaffirmed SLAJ’s dedication to promoting a credible, independent and responsible media, noting that journalism plays a key role in upholding truth, accountability and national cohesion.

“The role of journalists remains vital in strengthening democracy, amplifying voices and fostering development,” he said.

Kamara added that the Independence milestone should inspire renewed patriotism, peace and progress across the country.

He called on journalists to continue serving the public with integrity while contributing to nation-building through responsible reporting.

Sierra Leone marks its Independence Day each year on April 27, commemorating its freedom from British colonial rule in 1961.

The celebration is often accompanied by national messages from leaders and institutions, reflecting on the country’s past and aspirations for the future.
