Sierra Leone is making progress in strengthening agricultural skills development with the introduction of new occupational standards for rice and cassava value chains, supported by UNESCO under its Better Education for Africa’s Rise (BEAR III) Project.

The initiative aims to improve Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the country by aligning agricultural training with modern industry needs and labour market demands. It focuses on building practical skills that can increase productivity in key crops such as rice and cassava, which are central to food security and the national economy.

According to UNESCO, the new standards will help ensure that training institutions deliver more relevant and consistent agricultural education. This includes developing structured competencies for farmers, trainers, and students working across the agricultural sector.

The programme is also expected to strengthen cooperation between government institutions, training providers, and the private sector. By improving skills development in agriculture, the initiative supports Sierra Leone’s broader goal of reducing food imports and boosting local production.

Officials say the reforms will also help create more job opportunities for young people by making agriculture more attractive as a career path, especially in rural communities where farming remains a major source of income.

The BEAR III Project continues to play a key role in supporting Sierra Leone’s education and skills development reforms, particularly in areas linked to agriculture, employment, and economic growth.
