US President Donald Trump has strengthened his influence within the Republican Party after Kentucky congressman Thomas Massie lost a key Republican primary election to Trump-backed candidate Ed Gallrein.

Massie, known as one of the few Republicans willing to openly challenge Trump on major political issues, was defeated in Kentucky’s fourth congressional district primary. Early results showed Gallrein leading with more than 54 percent of the vote.

The race attracted national attention after Trump publicly campaigned against Massie for months, accusing him of disloyalty to the Republican agenda. Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL and farmer, received strong backing from Trump and his allies throughout the campaign.

Political analysts say the result highlights Trump’s continued control over the Republican Party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Massie had built a reputation as an independent-minded conservative who often opposed party leadership and questioned some Trump-backed policies.

The Kentucky contest also became one of the most expensive congressional primaries in recent US political history, with millions of dollars spent by political action groups and party supporters.
