Tonkolili District, Sierra Leone – A 23-year-old man in the town of Mile 91 has been left permanently blind following an acid attack reportedly sparked by a rivalry over a woman. The victim, Ibrahim Conteh, an employee of Miro Forestry Company, is now seeking justice and support as he endures life-changing injuries.

The incident occurred on the night of Thursday, August 22, 2024, when Conteh was on his way to work. According to eyewitnesses, an unknown individual crossed the road and threw a substance, later identified as acid, onto Conteh’s face. His cries for help drew bystanders, who guided him home but were unable to prevent his blindness.

Shortly after the incident, it was revealed that Abdul Kassim Turay, a man allegedly in conflict with Conteh over a woman, was identified as the attacker. Reports indicate that Turay had previously confronted Conteh’s family, warning him to distance himself from his girlfriend. Following the attack, Turay reportedly fled but was later apprehended in Freetown.

Conteh’s family reports that doctors have confirmed he has lost sight in both eyes permanently. “He won’t see with both eyes again,” a family member shared, adding to the community’s grief and anger over the incident.

The Mile 91 Police Division is investigating the attack, with the case file currently with the State Counsel in Makeni for further legal action. The suspect remains in police custody, pending counsel from state authorities.

Amid this tragedy, Conteh is reaching out for support from individuals, NGOs, and the government to aid in his recovery and adaptation to his new reality. His main plea, however, is for justice. “I’m calling on the Sierra Leone Police and the Judiciary to ensure justice is served,” Conteh said, hoping that his suffering will not be in vain.

This devastating case sheds light on the need for accountability and stronger measures to prevent violent crimes across the country.
