Sierra Leone’s Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh has called for a credible and independent judiciary, describing it as key to peace, democratic governance and economic growth in the region.
He made the statement while opening the ECOWAS Judicial Council Statutory Meeting in Freetown on 23 April 2026. The two-day meeting was organised by the Directorate of Legal Affairs of the ECOWAS and focused on strengthening justice, human rights and the rule of law across West Africa.
Vice President Jalloh stressed that public trust in the judiciary is essential for stability, noting that without credibility, justice systems cannot effectively support democracy or development.
The ECOWAS Judicial Council is the highest judicial body of the regional bloc. It is made up of Presidents of Supreme Courts from member states or their representatives.
The Council oversees the proper functioning, independence and integrity of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, including matters related to the appointment, discipline and administration of its judges.
The meeting brought together top judicial officials from across the region to discuss ways to improve legal systems and strengthen cooperation among member states.
