Melicia Barrie, a 27-year-old Sierra Leonean artist, is the founder of MelArt Designs. She specializes in drawing, paintings of different designs, and making stencils on canvas, cards, or walls.
Melicia attended Zadet preparatory and primary school, Richard Allen Junior and Senior Secondary School, and graduated from the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology with a Diploma in Social Work. Currently, she is pursuing an Associate Degree in Multimedia Broadcasting and advertising at the Limkokwing University. Melicia was part of the Global Youth Network and IOM entrepreneurship training. She has succeeded in building a website for her company (melartsl.com) to showcase her artworks online.
During an interview with Salone Messenger, Melicia shared that she has been into art since she was a kid, and it has always been her passion. She did not enroll in any art school but kept practicing to develop more skills in the artistry.
One of the challenges she faces as an artist is the lack of art materials in Sierra Leone, which causes delays in the art field. She encourages young people interested in art not to be afraid and to keep practicing and being passionate about what they do.
