In response to growing public concerns about the condition of the Makambo bridge on the Makeni-Magburaka road in Bombali District, the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) has reassured the public of the bridge’s safety and structural integrity.
The concerns surfaced after several reports on social media suggested potential dangers associated with the bridge near Mabole village. These reports triggered anxiety among road users, particularly those who frequently travel along this critical route that connects key regions.
Reacting swiftly, the SLRA dispatched a team of engineers to conduct an in-depth inspection of the bridge and the surrounding road network. According to the engineers’ findings, while there is evidence of minor settlement in the road adjacent to the bridge on the Magburaka side, the bridge itself remains structurally sound and poses no immediate risk to travelers.
The settlement, which has resulted in visible cracks on the road pavement, is believed to have been caused by recent severe weather conditions, including flooding. Such environmental factors are not uncommon in the region, especially during the rainy season.
SLRA, in partnership with the Ministry of Works and Public Assets (MOWPA), has assured the public that they are actively monitoring the situation. The authorities have already initiated plans to address the minor settlement issue to prevent it from escalating. Emergency repair works are expected to begin soon to restore the affected section of the road.
In a statement, the SLRA emphasized its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and reliability of the nation’s road infrastructure. The authority highlighted that maintaining and upgrading road networks is a continuous effort, and they remain vigilant in responding to any issues that may arise.
The public is urged to remain calm and continue using the Makeni-Magburaka road with confidence, as the SLRA remains dedicated to providing a safe and efficient transportation network for all citizens.
