In a bid to reduce neonatal mortality, Rotary International has trained more than 650 health workers in Sierra Leone through its “Helping Babies Breathe” program. The initiative focuses on preventing perinatal asphyxia, a leading cause of infant deaths in the country.
“This training aims to equip healthcare workers with life-saving skills in newborn resuscitation,” the organization shared on social media platform X.
Sierra Leone continues to struggle with one of the highest infant mortality rates globally, with an estimated 70 deaths per 1,000 live births, according to recent data from Statista. Rotary International hopes that by providing this essential training, they can make a significant impact in reducing these tragic numbers.
Rotary has a long-standing history of supporting vulnerable communities in Sierra Leone through its local clubs, including the Rotary Club of Freetown-Sunset and Rotaract Clubs across the region. This latest initiative is part of their ongoing commitment to improving healthcare and saving lives in the country.
