Bali, Indonesia – September 2, 2024:
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., of Liberia delivered a compelling address at the Indonesia-Africa Forum, emphasizing the importance of enhancing Liberia-Indonesia relations as a catalyst for sustainable economic transformation. Speaking to African leaders and high-ranking Indonesian officials at the Mulia Conference Center in Bali, President Boakai highlighted the historical ties between Liberia and Indonesia, which date back to Liberia’s participation in the 1955 Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung.
Reflecting on the enduring partnership, President Boakai noted, “Our two nations share a long history of friendship and cooperation that spans over five decades. From the early participation of a Liberian delegation at the Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung in 1955 to the formal establishment of diplomatic relations in 1965, our countries have worked together to build bridges of understanding and solidarity.” He underscored the mutual commitment to peace, development, and prosperity that has characterized the bilateral relationship, with both nations collaborating in areas such as trade, investment, education, and capacity building.
At the heart of President Boakai’s address was the introduction of Liberia’s ambitious “ARREST Agenda,” a strategic development plan aimed at fostering sustainable economic and human growth. The ARREST Agenda, which stands for Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law, Education, Sanitation, and Tourism, encapsulates the key pillars of Liberia’s priorities under his administration. President Boakai emphasized the significance of agricultural development as a means of food security and economic empowerment, infrastructure expansion, adherence to the rule of law, educational advancement, improved sanitation, and the promotion of tourism.
“Our vision is encapsulated in the ARREST Agenda, which stands as a testament to our commitment to sustainable human and economic growth in Liberia, a nation where potential abounds, yet challenges persist,” he stated.
To further strengthen Liberia-Indonesia relations, President Boakai proposed the establishment of a Resident Embassy of Indonesia in Liberia, a move he believes will facilitate deeper connections and enhance bilateral cooperation. He also extended an invitation to Indonesian enterprises to explore investment opportunities in Liberia, envisioning a “dynamic alignment” where both nations can mutually benefit from each other’s resources, expertise, and innovation.
In addition, President Boakai expressed his gratitude to the Government of Indonesia for the scholarships provided to Liberian students, acknowledging their role in enhancing Liberia’s capacity in various sectors. He lauded Indonesia’s investment in education and human capital development, which he sees as a reflection of the country’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s growth and development goals.
In his concluding remarks, President Boakai reaffirmed Liberia’s dedication to strengthening its relationship with Indonesia and other African nations. “As we continue to navigate the challenges of the 21st century, it is essential for countries to work together in a spirit of partnership and solidarity. Liberia values its relationship with Indonesia and remains committed to further deepening our cooperation in areas of mutual interest,” he said, emphasizing the potential to create a brighter future through collaborative efforts.
The Indonesia-Africa Forum, a key platform for fostering cooperation and building strategic alliances between Indonesia and African nations, continues to play a vital role in exploring avenues for increased trade, investment, and development. President Boakai’s address underscores Liberia’s proactive approach to international collaboration and its unwavering commitment to sustainable development.
