The High Commissioner of India to Sierra Leone, Baisnab Charan Pradhan, has extended warm greetings to the government and people of Sierra Leone as India marks its 79th Independence Day.
In his message, the High Commissioner reflected on 15 August 1947, the day India gained its freedom from colonial rule through unity, resilience, and sacrifice. He paid tribute to the vision of India’s leaders, the courage of its freedom fighters, and the enduring spirit of its citizens.
“Over the decades, India has made significant progress in economic development, science and technology, education, space exploration, health care, and renewable energy, while staying committed to democracy and pluralism,” he said.
Mr Pradhan also highlighted the strong and long-standing relationship between India and Sierra Leone, describing it as “warm, cordial, and time-tested,” built on shared values, historical ties, and a commitment to peace and progress.
He noted that in recent years, the two countries have deepened cooperation in areas such as capacity building, health, education, infrastructure, agriculture, energy, and digital technology. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s development under the spirit of South-South cooperation.
“As we celebrate our Independence Day, we also celebrate the friendship between our two nations. I am confident that together we will continue to strengthen our bonds for the mutual benefit of our peoples and contribute to a peaceful and prosperous future for all,” he concluded.
India’s Independence Day marks the country’s emergence as a sovereign and democratic nation in 1947, an event celebrated annually with national pride and reflection.
