The European Union has marked 50 years of cooperation with Sierra Leone, highlighting decades of support in key development sectors.

The EU Delegation in Freetown hosted a press launch to celebrate the milestone, covering the period from 1976 to 2026. The event brought together senior diplomats and government officials to reflect on the long-standing relationship and outline future priorities.

Speaking at the event, EU Ambassador Jacek Jankowski said the partnership has played a key role in supporting national development. He noted that the EU remains committed to working closely with Sierra Leone to promote sustainable development and inclusive growth.

Representing the government, Kenyeh Barlay said the collaboration has contributed to progress in several sectors, including infrastructure, education, agriculture, governance, and social services. She added that these efforts have helped improve livelihoods across the country.

Diplomats from Ireland, France, and Germany also attended the event, showing a united European support for Sierra Leone’s development agenda.

Over the past five decades, the EU has been one of Sierra Leone’s key development partners, supporting projects aimed at economic growth, institutional strengthening, and poverty reduction. The partnership has also focused on building resilience and improving public services.

Officials say the anniversary is not only a time to reflect on past achievements but also an opportunity to strengthen cooperation in line with Sierra Leone’s national development priorities.

The EU reaffirmed its commitment to continue working with the government and people of Sierra Leone to address current challenges and create more opportunities for future growth.
