Passenger movement through Sierra Leone’s main international airport recorded a strong increase in 2025, according to figures released by the Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority.
In a post shared at the end of the year, Musayeroh Barrie said a total of 268,929 passengers were processed through Freetown International Airport (FNA) during 2025.
She also revealed that airline activity increased significantly, with more than 2,000 airline movements recorded over the year. The rise in flights helped to support an additional 18,323 passengers, pointing to growing demand for air travel to and from Sierra Leone.
Ms Barrie described the figures as “a clear sign of progress and confidence in our skies,” noting that improved airline connectivity reflects renewed trust by international and regional carriers in Sierra Leone’s aviation sector.
Industry observers say the growth is linked to better regulatory oversight, improved airport operations, and stronger engagement with airlines, as the country works to position itself as a more accessible destination for business, tourism, and regional travel.

The increase comes at a time when Sierra Leone continues efforts to modernise its aviation infrastructure and align its systems with international safety and security standards.
In 2024, Sierra Leone’s air travel reached a record high of approximately 127,177 incoming passengers, marking a steady 7% growth driven by the modernization of the Freetown International Airport terminal and reduced aviation taxes. On the ground, the sector was defined by the launch of the “Waka Fine” bus service, which transformed urban mobility by providing reliable transit for over 26,000 daily commuters.
