Sierra Leone’s Parliament has officially passed the National Security and Central Intelligence Bill 2025, creating a new unit known as the State Protection Service (SPS).

The new law replaces the National Security and Central Intelligence Act 2023, which previously handled both domestic and international security operations.

Under the new legislation, the SPS will be responsible for providing protection to top government officials. These include the President, Vice President, their immediate families, the Speaker of Parliament, government ministers, Supreme Court judges, as well as former Presidents and Vice Presidents.

Authorities say the SPS will operate in a similar way to the United States Secret Service, focusing on the safety of high-profile individuals and key state figures.

The move is seen as part of efforts to strengthen national security and improve the protection of public officials in Sierra Leone.

Further details on how the SPS will operate, including its structure and deployment, are expected to be made public in the coming weeks.
