The National Revenue Authority (NRA) is set to host a major regional customs conference in May 2026, marking a significant moment for Sierra Leone’s role in international trade and customs management.
The event, known as the 32nd Conference of Directors General of Customs for the West and Central Africa Region of the World Customs Organization (WCO-WCA), will bring together top customs officials, technical experts, development partners, and private sector players from across the region.
Officials say the decision to host the conference reflects growing confidence in Sierra Leone’s customs system and ongoing reforms within the NRA under the leadership of Commissioner General, Mrs Jeneba J. Bangura.
Ahead of the main conference, pre-meetings will begin on 4 May with the Private Sector Group, followed by the Regional Experts Committee from 5 to 6 May. These sessions are expected to provide technical input and help shape key discussions during the main event.
The conference will focus on strengthening customs systems and improving trade facilitation across the region. This year’s theme, “A customs that protects society through its vigilance and commitment,” highlights the link between security and trade.
Key discussions will centre on digital transformation, smart customs systems, compliance measures, and stronger cooperation in the fight against illicit trade.
The NRA is working closely with partners including the WCO-WCA Secretariat and the Regional Capacity Building Office to ensure the event is successful.
Observers say hosting the conference shows progress in reform, transparency, and innovation within the Authority, and positions Sierra Leone as an emerging leader in regional customs administration.
The meeting is also expected to review past decisions, set new policy directions, and strengthen partnerships with international organisations and the private sector to support safe and efficient trade.
