The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has sent a congratulatory message to Sierra Leone as the country marks its 65th Independence Day.

In a statement released on 27 April 2026, Rubio highlighted the strong relationship between the United States and Sierra Leone, stressing their shared commitment to peace, security and economic growth.

He said both countries will continue to work together to promote development and improve the lives of their citizens, while also wishing President Julius Maada Bio and all Sierra Leoneans a happy Independence celebration.

Sierra Leone is celebrating 65 years since gaining independence, under the theme “Building a Responsive, Resilient and Cohesive Sierra Leone.”

This year’s celebration is expected to be modest, with activities including an interfaith service at State House, bringing together citizens and religious leaders to reflect on the country’s progress and unity.

The message from the United States adds to international goodwill as Sierra Leone marks another milestone in its history.
