Sierra Leone is once again in the spotlight after a tourist visiting the country revealed that a famous global advert for the Bounty Chocolate Bar was filmed there in 1988.
The advert, known as “The Taste of Paradise,” became one of the most recognisable chocolate commercials in the world, showing white sandy beaches, palm trees and clear blue waters. For many years, viewers believed the location was just a generic tropical island, but it has now been widely linked to Sierra Leone.
The latest attention comes from Davud Akhundzada, a tourist currently in Sierra Leone, who spoke about the advert in a recent video. In his video titled “I Didn’t Expect To Experience These In Sierra Leone – Bounty Chocolate Advertisement Was Filmed Here,” he shared his surprise at discovering that the iconic commercial was shot in the country.
In the video, Akhundzada highlighted Sierra Leone’s natural beauty, especially its beaches, and explained that he did not expect to learn that such a globally recognised advert was filmed there. His video has since drawn interest online, with many viewers expressing surprise and pride over the country’s connection to the famous brand.
The commercial is believed to have been filmed at locations including River No. 2 Beach, one of the most popular beaches near Freetown. Known for its clean shoreline and calm waters, the beach has long been considered one of the country’s top tourist destinations.

The Bounty Chocolate Bar, produced by Mars, Incorporated, has always been marketed using tropical imagery to reflect its coconut filling. The 1988 advert played a key role in building that image globally.
Nearly four decades after the advert was released, Sierra Leone’s role in creating the “taste of paradise” image is gaining fresh recognition, this time through the eyes of a visitor discovering it firsthand.
