Statistics Sierra Leone and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) have renewed their commitment to ensuring that Sierra Leone’s 2026 national population census is credible, transparent, and reliable.

The reaffirmation followed a joint engagement between officials of both institutions, where they discussed preparations for the upcoming census and the need for continued collaboration. The meeting focused on technical support, planning, and coordination to ensure the exercise meets international standards.

Officials from Statistics Sierra Leone said the census will provide important data needed for national planning and development. They noted that accurate population figures are essential for effective decision-making in sectors such as healthcare, education, housing, and economic growth.

UNFPA representatives also confirmed their continued support for the process, including technical assistance and capacity building. They said reliable population data is key to tracking development progress and addressing the needs of citizens across the country.

Both institutions emphasised the importance of public trust and participation, stating that awareness campaigns will be necessary to encourage people to take part in the census. They added that community engagement will play a major role in ensuring complete and accurate data collection.

Observers say strong cooperation between national agencies and international partners is critical for the success of large-scale exercises like a population census. They note that transparency and proper coordination are essential to building confidence in the final results.

The 2026 census is expected to provide updated insights into Sierra Leone’s population, helping to guide government policies and development programmes in the years ahead.
