Prominent Sierra Leonean lawyer Basita Michael has criticised what she described as misplaced priorities by government officials amid the ongoing political boycott announced by the All People’s Congress (APC).

In a public statement, Michael said the boycott could have serious implications for governance, service delivery, and national unity, but warned that these concerns are not receiving enough attention. She argued that public debate has instead focused on the use of government vehicles by opposition figures rather than the wider political issues involved.

The boycott by the APC followed concerns over the appointment of the Chief Electoral Commissioner, Edmond Sylvester Alpha, which the party believes could affect public confidence in the electoral process. Michael noted that the situation requires careful national discussion because of its potential impact on the country’s democratic institutions.

Her comments came after recent statements from senior government officials, including Chief Minister David Sengeh, who criticised Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr over the alleged use of government vehicles while the council faces financial challenges.

State House Communications Director Myk Berewa also questioned the consistency of the boycott, asking why some benefits linked to government resources were still being used despite the political protest.

Michael said that while such issues may be relevant, focusing only on them risks ignoring the broader consequences of the boycott, which could affect governance and deepen political divisions if not properly addressed.

She called for greater attention to the national implications of the political standoff and urged leaders on all sides to focus on dialogue and responsible decision-making at a time of rising political tension.
