Julius Maada Bio tells IMF boss Sierra Leone’s economy is improving despite global uncertainty

President Julius Maada Bio has said Sierra Leone’s macroeconomic outlook is improving despite ongoing global economic uncertainty, following talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The president made the remarks after a meeting with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, on the sidelines of international engagements.

In a statement, President Bio said the discussion focused on Sierra Leone’s economic recovery efforts, reforms and ongoing cooperation with the IMF. He thanked the fund for its continued confidence in the country and its support under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme.

He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the ECF programme, describing it as central to stabilising the economy, improving public finance management and supporting long-term growth.

The meeting comes at a time when many developing economies are facing pressure from inflation, debt challenges and global market instability. Sierra Leone has been implementing fiscal and structural reforms aimed at strengthening economic resilience and restoring confidence.

IMF support under the ECF programme is designed to help low-income countries address balance-of-payments challenges while promoting sustainable growth and poverty reduction.

President Bio said the government remains focused on maintaining reform momentum and working with international partners to improve economic conditions for Sierra Leoneans.
