A fuel pump attendant identified as Anthony S. Kargbo has been shot dead at the S.S Lodge fuel station along the Makeni–Kamakwie highway in Makeni, police have confirmed.
The incident happened at about 7:00 p.m. (19:00 GMT) on Tuesday in Worreh village, just past Yoni village, according to the Sierra Leone Police.
Sergeant John Abass Kamara, Media Officer for the Northeast Region, said the alleged shooter fled the scene shortly after the attack and remains at large as police launch a manhunt.
Kargbo was rushed to Makeni Regional Government Hospital, where a post-mortem examination has been scheduled.
The shooting sparked unrest in the local community, with residents in Worreh and nearby areas reportedly throwing stones at the fuel station following the tragedy. Police have cordoned off the area and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the suspect.
While the motive behind the killing is not yet known, locals described Kargbo as a “polite and dedicated worker,” and civil society groups are calling for stronger security measures for night-shift workers at public service sites.
The police investigation is ongoing.
