Joseph Lumbahe: UWC Alumnus and Trailblazer in AI Technology

Joseph Lumbahe, a graduate of the University of the Western Cape (UWC), has reached an important milestone in his career. He has become the first person to be appointed to the specialised Microsoft Global AI Team in South Africa. He now works at Microsoft South Africa as a Senior AI Technology Specialist, focusing on building AI-powered applications.

This new role is a major achievement and reflects his strong skills and years of hard work in artificial intelligence. Lumbahe developed his interest in AI and machine learning while studying at UWC. He credits much of his success to the support and guidance he received from his lecturers, especially Professor Mehrdad Ghaziasgar from the Faculty of Natural Sciences.

According to him, the training and encouragement he received at UWC helped shape his career and gave him the confidence to grow in the technology field.

At Microsoft, Lumbahe will be involved in using modern AI tools toward addressing real problems of businesses and communities. In this job, he will work closely with the design and testing of AI-based solutions with partners and clients. He’ll also have to help show how AI can be used practically across various industries.

Earlier this year, Lumbahe became a Regional Ambassador for the South African Artificial Intelligence Association, SAAIA. He uses his platform to support responsible AI use and helps encourage ethical technology practices throughout the country.

He is also a Non-Executive Board Director at the African Energy Empowerment Youth Council, using this platform to empower the next generation in energy and leveraging technology to enhance life and livelihood. He has also received numerous awards over the years in recognition of his work and leadership.

In 2024, he was named the Most Influential AI Technology Business Leader in Africa by the African Excellence Awards. He was also recognised as an African Genius in 2024 for his efforts to improve Africa’s position in the global technology space. In 2023, he received a Technology Excellence Award from South Africa’s President through the Institute of IT Professionals South Africa.

Additionally, he is a member of the ForbesBLK community and an Obama Leadership Network fellow. His work has been represented in prominent publications such as BusinessDay and SA Tech Magazine. In 2023, he was ranked among the Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africans for the Technology and Innovation category.

He has won awards for his work in the Technology industry. These awards include the following: Geekulcha, Africa Technology Rising Star, and the TransUnion National Rising Star Awards. Lumbahe has a strong passion for education and mentorship.

He encourages students and alumni to remain connected to their institutions, to continuously learn, and to give back to students who are coming behind them. He frequently talks about community and success in his talks and interviews.
