Sierra Leonean traditional folk singer and women’s rights advocate, Fantacee Wiz, has once again used her voice to highlight a growing national concern—the culture that protects perpetrators of domestic violence and silences victims.
In a message shared with her followers, Fantacee Wiz explained that she has been advised many times to stay away from domestic-violence cases. She said this is not because people do not care, but because domestic-violence abusers often have deep support from society. She added that perpetrators use every tool to silence victims and make them feel powerless.
According to Fantacee Wiz, abusers use religious leaders, family members, and emotional manipulation to control their partners and avoid accountability. She described wife-beaters as manipulative and unchanging, saying they only change their story to look innocent in the eyes of others.
“Wife-beaters are manipulative, narcissistic, and unchanging,” she said.
Fantacee Wiz also talked about how society plays a role in forcing women to stay in abusive relationships. Victims are often blamed for speaking out, blamed for leaving, or even accused of “provoking” the violence. She said women are shamed publicly, while abusers are protected and supported.
She explained that when she tries to help victims, people always tell her to stay away and let the couple “make peace.” But for her, the issue is much deeper than that.
“The entire point is to make sure the cycle of abuse is broken permanently,” she said.
Fantacee Wiz believes that the problem is not just the abusers themselves, but the culture around them. She said community leaders, religious leaders, and even families sometimes protect violent men instead of holding them responsible.
She stressed that ending domestic violence must start with ordinary people refusing to stay silent.
“Ending domestic violence begins with you and me. It begins with refusing to be silent,” she stated.
The singer promised that she will continue to speak up and support women facing violence, even if the road is difficult.
“We win some, we lose some, but we go again. Giving up on voiceless victims is not an option,” she said.
Fantacee Wiz has remained a strong voice for women’s rights, using her platform and music to raise awareness about domestic abuse, gender inequality, and harmful cultural practices. Many people have praised her for speaking boldly on issues that affect women across Sierra Leone.
