The West African Consortium for Clinical Research on Epidemic Pathogens (WACCREP), co-chaired by Dr. Alhaji U. Njai, has been selected as one of five winners of the inaugural Epidemic Science Leadership and Innovation Network (EPSILON) grant — a new initiative aimed at boosting Africa’s capacity to respond to future pandemics.
WACCREP was chosen from more than 250 consortia across the continent, placing it among the top five finalists in this highly competitive process.
The EPSILON grant is part of the Africa Pandemic Sciences Collaborative, a multi-year partnership between the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA), the Pandemic Sciences Institute at the University of Oxford, and the Mastercard Foundation. The programme seeks to support cutting-edge scientific research while building a strong African workforce capable of tackling epidemics and pandemics.
Dr. Njai announced that WACCREP’s proposal focuses on strengthening clinical and genomics research capacity on arboviruses, which are mosquito-borne viruses increasingly threatening public health in West Africa. The project will enhance understanding of the natural progression of these diseases and improve regional preparedness for outbreaks.
Dr. Njai expressed particular joy over the capacity-building opportunities embedded in the EPSILON grant. Working through the University of Sierra Leone and the Institute for Biomedical and One Health Research at Koinadugu College, WACCREP will train and mentor young African scientists pursuing Master’s and PhD programmes.
“This grant gives us the platform to develop and equip the next generation of African researchers who will lead the continent’s response to epidemics and pandemics,” Dr. Njai said.
He praised the collaborative effort of WACCREP’s scientific team drawn from Mali, Guinea, Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, and Sierra Leone, describing the achievement as a victory for regional partnership.
Dr. Njai also extended gratitude to the Science for Africa Foundation, the Pandemic Sciences Institute at Oxford University, and the Mastercard Foundation for selecting WACCREP for this prestigious award.
This recognition marks a significant step in improving Africa’s pandemic science ecosystem and strengthening the region’s ability to tackle emerging health threats.
