Sierra Leonean youth leader Alpha Habib Bangura has marked the anniversary of a scholarship that changed his life, sharing a story of resilience, education, and transformation.
On 1 August 2017, Bangura was selected as a Wells Mountain Initiative (WMI) Scholar—a global programme that supports young people from developing countries with access to education and leadership opportunities.
At the time, Bangura says he was in desperate need of support. “The scholarship came at a time when I needed it most,” he said. What followed, he explains, was a journey from hardship to international recognition.
Since receiving the WMI scholarship, Bangura has earned a BA (Hons) in Global Challenges from the African Leadership University in Rwanda, a certificate in Public Leadership and Policy from the School of Politics, Policy and Governance in Nigeria, and a master’s degree in Sustainable Development from the University of Sussex Business School in the UK.
He credits the WMI programme—founded by Tom Wells and his team—for providing the foundation for his development. “What started as a kind gesture has turned out to be the cornerstone investment in my journey as a leader,” Bangura said.
From being a 16-year-old school dropout, Bangura has also received a Commonwealth Scholarship from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and now leads the Digital Economy Cluster in the Office of Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr.
“This is a story of second chances,” he said. “I can only be grateful to God and commit to giving back.”
Bangura ended his message with thanks to the WMI community and a personal note—his son was born on 1 August too, making it a double celebration.
