The 47th Annual Lions Day with the United Nations convened today at the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON), uniting Lions Club members, United Nations officials, and global partners under the theme “The Future of Service.” The event emphasized the critical importance of adaptability, innovation, and cross-border collaboration in addressing contemporary global challenges.
In her keynote address, UNON Director-General Zainab Hawa Bangura highlighted the evolving landscape of humanitarian service. “The future of service lies in our ability to adapt, innovate, and collaborate across borders,” she stated. “Together, we must harness technology, empower youth, and strengthen partnerships to drive real change.”
Bangura, a distinguished Sierra Leonean politician and social activist, has been at the helm of UNON since 2019. Her extensive career includes roles as Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Minister of Health and Sanitation, and the United Nations Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict. Throughout her tenure, she has been a steadfast advocate for human rights, governance, and women’s empowerment.
