Abass Sesay, a resilient war survivor and aspiring lawyer, has made a heartfelt appeal to His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio. In an open letter, Abass reflects on his journey from surviving the Sierra Leone civil war, during which he lost his right arm at the age of 3, to becoming a role model for fellow survivors.

Abass, now 28, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work and is currently a finalist in law studies at Fourah Bay College. His accomplishments as one of the first war victims pursuing a degree in law symbolize hope for others. Despite his perseverance, Abass expresses concern over his future, citing difficulties in securing employment despite years of dedication and volunteerism in national service roles such as serving in the National Youth Corps and the Law Reform Commission.

In his message to President Bio, Abass references the President’s vision for a better future for the country, urging him to provide support that could help Abass and others in similar situations reach their full potential.

The letter highlights Abass’s commitment to contributing to Sierra Leone’s development but acknowledges that obstacles, particularly related to inclusivity and accessibility, are hindering his progress.

Abass’s story is a poignant reminder of the untapped potential of war survivors and people with special needs in Sierra Leone, who continue to hope for a more inclusive society.
