After missing a penalty during the Championship playoff final between Coventry and Luton Town, Mohamed Fankaty Dabo, a footballer of Sierra Leonean heritage, was subjected to racial abuse.
Despite a 1-1 draw in normal and extra time, Luton Town won the game and gained promotion to the Premier League, earning around £140m. Coventry City received nothing and their player was left to deal with the vile abuse.
The club’s chairman condemned the messages, stating that there is no place for racism or discrimination on social media or in person and that they will take action against those responsible. Coventry is a city that prides itself on its tolerance and multiculturalism.
