After 28 Years, Football Star Jerome Bettis Returns to Notre Dame for Bachelor’s Degree

Jerome Bettis, a 49-year-old American football legend and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Famer, has returned to the University of Notre Dame to complete his Bachelor’s degree after leaving his education 28 years ago to focus on football.

Speaking to NBC, Bettis said he felt strange returning to school, as he finds himself behind the latest flow of activities. He uses an actual pad and a pen while his classmates take notes on iPads. Once nicknamed “The Bus,” he now gets lost in new buildings on campus like a college freshman.

Bettis made the decision to return to school to fulfill a promise he made to his mother to attain a Bachelor’s degree. “In my immediate family, I’ll be the first person to graduate from college,” he said. “But most importantly, I have two children. For them to see dad finish a commitment that he set out some 27 years ago, for me to complete that, I think it says a lot to them.”
