Last week, I graduated from the University of Leeds with an MSc in Food Science and Nutrition with Distinction.
I am also delighted to have scored a distinction grade (82%) in my dissertation titled “In silico and In vitro Assessment of Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Wild) Protein Hydrolysates” The findings from this research suggest that yellow quinoa-derived protein hydrolysates and bioactive peptides can be used in the development of functional foods with antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antihypertensive properties. Many thanks to my dissertation supervisor, Dr Alan Javier Hernandez Alvarez for his incredible support and mentorship during the research work.
The past 12 months at the UOL have been demanding yet rewarding. Through research-led teaching, problem-solving presentations, seminars, and laboratory works, I have developed excellent research skills, team-work, innovative problem-solving, and analytical skills, which are requisite skills for a Food Scientist. Finally, I acknowledge the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for sponsoring my master’s programme through the Chevening Awards.
Dolapo Olawoyin is a 2021/2022 Chevening Scholar currently studying a Masters in Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Leeds. He graduated from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Nigeria with a B.Tech Degree in Medical Biochemistry, emerging as the best graduating student.
He has had diverse experiences that cut across the pharmaceutical industry, clinical laboratory, and academia. In 2020, Dolapo worked as a Teaching Assistant at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Nigeria, and as an intern at one of Nigeria’s biggest pharmaceutical industries in 2017. He has also published three academic papers in international journals. Passionate about helping young people develop their research skills, he co-founded Science Café, a research community focused on inspiring early career bio-scientists passionate about science, research, and career advancement.
Currently, he volunteers with the Food cycle, United kingdom, and Lactation Aid for infant in Intensive care initiative (LAIIT), Texas, USA, where he continues to use his nutritional skills to promote health and well-being. Dolapo’s research interest focuses on isolation and characterisation of novel Bioactive peptides from plant-based proteins and their therapeutic roles in reducing oxidative processes, diabetes, cancer, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease risk. Dolapo’s long-term goal is to improve global health by discovering novel nutraceuticals and functional foods that will improve the quality of life and reduce mortality.
