The Vickie Remoe Prize, one of Sierra Leone’s most respected awards for journalists and media content creators, has announced that applications will open on February 2, 2026.The prize celebrates excellence in news reporting, photography, documentary video, and digital content creation.
Organised by the Vickie Remoe Institute of Digital Communications, the award aims to recognise original, creative, and impactful storytelling by Sierra Leoneans. It is open to citizens residing in Sierra Leone, and women and people living with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
What the Prize Offers
This year, the total prize fund of NLE 200,000 will be shared across five main categories, which include:
News Writing
Photography
Broadcasting / TV
Documentary Video
Content Creation (digital media such as podcasts, vlogs, reels, blogs)
Rules and full eligibility details will be shared when the application portal opens. Creators are urged to prepare rigorous and thoughtful work before submitting, as the prize is known to be highly competitive.
About the Vickie Remoe Prize
The Vickie Remoe Prize was created to boost the quality of media and storytelling in Sierra Leone and to support emerging talent in journalism and new media. It encourages journalists, photographers, videographers, and content creators to push boundaries and tell stories that make a difference in society.
The prize is judged by a board of Sierra Leonean media professionals who look for originality, quality research, creativity, and impact in the submitted works.
Previous Winners
Over the years, the Vickie Remoe Prize has helped highlight and elevate new media voices in Sierra Leone:
Marian Amaria Bangura won the 2023 News Writing Prize for her in-depth report analysing government performance and public expectations.
Morlai Ibrahim Kamara, a reporter and team lead at Sierraloaded, also won the News Writing Award, earning praise for his reporting on police officers affected by a fire disaster.
Abu Bakarr Jalloh, who is the founder of The African Dream, was among the winners in the Content Creation category in 2024, he was recognised for his work in human interest and inspiring stories in Sierra Leone and beyond.
Past winners are a host of talented creators from across the Sierra Leone’s media landscape, such as Ahmed Tejan Cole, Dainkeh Kamara, Hassan Bangura, and Ramatu Tunkara.
The award offers financial support and also helps build careers and raises the profile of Sierra Leone’s storytellers locally and internationally. It is seen by many as a stepping stone for young and deprived media practitioners who are eager to grow their skills and contribute to the Sierra Leone’s media landscape.
