In a landmark move to end recurring power outages and tackle alleged fuel mismanagement, Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas and Deputy Speaker Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh have overseen the installation of a 5,000-liter automated fuel station to power Parliament’s generator.

Installed by NP-SL, this state-of-the-art system is directly connected to the generator, allowing for precise monitoring of fuel consumption and eliminating manual interventions that often led to inefficiencies and mismanagement.

“For too long, fuel shortages have disrupted Parliamentary operations, with frequent claims of insufficient fuel despite budget allocations. This system will allow us to monitor consumption effectively and uncover any malpractices,” Speaker Thomas asserted during the inspection of the facility.

Speaker Thomas highlighted past instances where outages occurred despite assurances from staff that fuel was available, leading to a thorough investigation and the decision to adopt a sustainable solution. The automated system ensures transparency by accurately tracking fuel usage, detecting discrepancies, and minimizing wastage.

“With this 5,000-liter fuel tank in place, Parliament can now precisely measure fuel usage, detect discrepancies, and take corrective action against any corruption in fuel administration,” he added, emphasizing that the new system will reduce financial burdens previously caused by unchecked fuel demands.

Declaring the issue of fuel shortages “permanently buried,” Speaker Thomas expressed confidence in the system’s ability to maintain consistent power supply and enhance operational stability. “This initiative is a significant step towards efficiency, accountability, and the effective use of Parliamentary resources,” he noted.

Deputy Speaker Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh echoed the sentiment, praising the collaboration with NP-SL and reiterating the commitment of Parliament’s leadership to ensure transparency and effectiveness in resource management.

The installation of the automated fuel system marks a turning point for Sierra Leone’s Parliament, addressing inefficiencies while setting a precedent for sustainable and accountable governance practices.
