Sierra Leonean artist and diplomat, Ambassador Dr Neneh Ada Yang, better known as Queennak, has become one of the country’s most celebrated cultural icons.
She is the first Sierra Leonean female musician to reach several global milestones, placing the nation’s music on the world stage and inspiring a new generation of artists.
Grammy Recognition
Queennak made history as the first female musician from Sierra Leone to be considered for a Grammy Award. She also became the first Sierra Leonean to join the Recording Academy, the body that organises the Grammys.
Her membership gives Sierra Leone a voice in one of the world’s biggest music institutions.
International Breakthroughs
Her music videos have been shown on major global platforms including MTV, BET, Trace Naija and Sound City.
She was also the first Sierra Leonean woman to attend the BET Awards, and in 2025 joined the BET Way Maker Men’s Summit production team – another first for the country.
Awards and Academic Honour
Queennak won the Best African AfroPop Artist award at the African Achievement Awards, becoming the first Sierra Leonean female artist to do so.
Her work in music and culture has also been recognised in academia. She is the first Sierra Leonean woman in music to receive a PhD in Arts, Dance and Music.
