Dr. Constance Cummings-John has made history as Sierra Leone’s first female general surgeon. She is the granddaughter of the country’s first female Mayor. This groundbreaking achievement was announced during the induction ceremony for fellows of the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) at the 64th annual general meeting, held in Sierra Leone at the Bintumani Conference Centre in Aberdeen, Freetown from March 4th to March 7th, 2024.
Dressed in the colors of blue, red, and yellow, Dr. Cummings-John confidently walked to the stage to receive her accolade at the well-attended regional gathering. As a general surgeon, she now has the authority to perform a wide range of surgical procedures, address medical needs, examine patients, make diagnoses, and conduct surgeries. General surgeons not only operate on various common ailments but also oversee patient care before, during, and after surgery.
Expressing her joy at receiving this honor in her home country, Dr. Cummings-John is currently based at Connaught Hospital in Freetown, where she is dedicated to her service. She encourages aspiring female surgeons to pursue their passion in the field. Her dedication and hard work serve as an inspiration to women, colleagues, and a new generation of junior doctors in Sierra Leone.
