Eric Kawa, a journalist from Sierra Leone, has been chosen as one of 15 young journalists from the Global South to participate in the prestigious CNN Academy Climate Storytelling Program in 2023. Sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation, the program aims to empower emerging journalists to highlight the impact of the climate crisis in their home countries.

The training program will take place from November 28th to December 10th, 2023, and will provide participants with valuable insights and skills to create compelling narratives about the climate crisis. At the end of the program, Eric Kawa and his peers will collaborate to produce impactful short documentaries that shed light on the far-reaching consequences of the climate crisis.

Eric Kawa is a multilingual journalist based in Freetown, Sierra Leone, with a B.A. in Mass Communication from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. He works as a correspondent for Africanews and collaborates with Capital Radio, Sierra Leone. He has also made significant contributions to China Global Television Network (CGTN) and The Voice of America (VOA). In addition to his journalistic work, Eric is the Owner/Producer of ‘Weekly Splash’ and ‘120 Seconds Countdown with Eric,’ both youth-focused educational programs. He is also skilled as a Voice Over Artist, Vlogger, and Event Host/Moderator.

Eric Kawa has been recognized as a fellow of the 3rd Nasser Fellowship for International Leadership (2022), the African Presidential Leadership Program (2020), and the British Council Future Newsworld (2021). He has also participated as a delegate of the World Youth Forum in 2019 and was selected to attend a radio training workshop for kids by Free Press Unlimited in 2015.

Eric Kawa’s inclusion in the 2023 CNN Academy Climate Storytelling Program is a testament to his journalistic abilities and dedication to addressing the critical issue of climate change. His work is expected to significantly contribute to raising awareness about the urgent need for climate action on a global scale as he embarks on this transformative journey.
