Sierra Leoneans living in China’s Guangdong Province have held a colourful Independence Heritage Dinner and Dance, combined with the inauguration of a new executive team, in a show of unity and cultural pride.

The event brought together members of the Sierra Leonean community and guests from different countries, highlighting a shared commitment to unity, identity and development.

Among the dignitaries present was Dr. AbuBakar Karim, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China. Representatives from the Economic and Commercial Counselling Centre of the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Guangzhou, members of the diplomatic corps, and delegates from the African Union in Guangdong also attended the programme.

In his keynote address, the Chairman, Mohamed Lamin Yahffa, said the gathering was not only about celebration but also about identity and purpose. He told guests that unity remains the community’s greatest strength and called for a more organised and forward-looking approach to building opportunities for Sierra Leoneans abroad.

The event also featured a vibrant cultural performance by a dance troupe, which entertained guests with traditional music and energetic displays that reflected Sierra Leone’s rich heritage.

Organisers described the programme as a success and thanked partners, sponsors and members of the African and international community for their support. Special praise was given to the newly inaugurated executive team for their efforts in planning and delivering the event.

The gathering ended with a renewed commitment from attendees to strengthen ties and continue building a strong Sierra Leonean community in Guangdong.
