From August 1, 2024, that is, two full days from today, Sierra Leone will occupy the top seat, chairing the United Nations Security Council for the whole of August.
President Dr. Julius Bio said: “Sierra Leone will be making another history. Few years ago, this was a challenge but now the country is well respected internationally. We have cleaned our image internationally. Years back, global decisions were being taken on our behalf but now, we lead the way in taking decisions for ourselves and for other countries. So, as a country, let’s stop acting little but strong and bold, as our country has now grown globally”.
Sierra Leone was elected unchallenged in 2023 to sit on the UN Security Council in 2024-25. The UN Security Council is made up of 15 members, including five permanent members (United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom) and ten countries elected for two years, half renewed each year, and respecting rules geographical distribution.
